In 2022, the National Testing Agency (NTA) introduced the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) as a unified national-level entrance exam, redefining undergraduate admissions across India’s participating universities. The goal was to provide “one test, many universities” and ensure equal opportunity for students from diverse educational boards.
This exam is open to students who have completed their 10+2 or equivalent credentials and seek admission to undergraduate programmes across central, state, deemed and private universities. It meets the requirement of participating institutions by offering a rigorous evaluation that blends language proficiency, domain-specific subject knowledge and general aptitude.
CUET is offered in a computer-based test (CBT) mode and covers three primary sections:
Section IA & IB (Languages)
Section II (Domain‐specific subjects)
Section III (General Test)
Designed to give all applicants a level playing field, the test enables them to seek admission into a wide range of courses using one streamlined platform.
Educational Qualification: Candidates must have completed their 10 + 2 (or equivalent) from a recognised board of education, or be appearing for the final exam in the current year.
Minimum Marks: For UG programmes, most participating universities expect a minimum aggregate of 50 % for General category students and 45 % for SC/ST/OBC candidates in their 10 + 2 exam (though individual universities may vary).
Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for appearing in CUET-UG in most cases; eligibility is based on educational qualification rather than age.
Variation by Programme: Since courses and universities differ, applicants should always verify specific eligibility criteria (such as subject combinations or additional tests) as stipulated by the respective university or programme.
Mode of Exam: Computer-Based Test (CBT) only.
Sections:
Section I: Languages (13 Indian languages)
Section II: Domain-specific subjects (23 subjects)
Section III: General Test (General Aptitude / Reasoning)
Question Type: All questions are multiple-choice (MCQs).
Number of Questions and Duration:
Each paper (Language / Domain / General) carries 50 questions.
Duration is 60 minutes per paper.
Marking Scheme:
Correct answer: +5 marks
Incorrect answer: –1 mark (negative marking)
Unanswered question: 0 marks
Subject choices:
Candidates can choose up to 5 subjects, including languages and/or domain subjects, depending on the university’s requirements.
